Center for Nuclear Technologies, Technical University of Denmark (DTU Nutech) is seeking a PhD student working on radiochemical analysis of hard to measure radionuclides and characterization of nuclear waste. The candidate will work in the Radioecology Section, Hevesy Laboratory Division at DTU Nutech, at DTU Risø Campus close to Roskilde.

About 14 employees in the Radioecology Section in Hevesy laboratory in DTU Nutech.  Work in the section covers research on development of radioanalytical methods, characterization of nuclear waste, radioactivity in marine and terrestrial environments, monitoring program and risk assessment of environmental radioactivity, public-sector consultancy.

Responsibilities and tasks
The work will cover the following tasks:

  • Development of radiochemical analysis method for hard to measure radionuclides (e.g., 135Cs and 126Sn) in waste samples from nuclear decommissioning using chemical separation combined with radiometric and mass spectrometry measurement
  • Characterization of various radioactive waste using the developed methods
  • Environmental tracer studies using 135Cs and 137Cs by analysis of archived environmental samples and the developed methods
Qualifications
Applicants should have a master degree in radiochemistry or analytical chemistry with professional background and experience within one or more of the following fields:
  • Radioanalytical chemistry
  • Nuclear analytical techniques (alpha, beta, gamma and liquid scintillation counter) and applications
  • Inorganic mass spectrometric techniques (e.g. ICP-MS, AMS)
  • Environmental chemistry
Applicants should be diligent, talented, and able to communicate scientific results in English both orally and in writing.  He/she must be able to work both in a team and individually. A preferred applicant has an excellent academic track record, solid research experience and is highly motivated towards developing new technology and making scientific breakthroughs.

Approval and Enrolment

Salary and appointment terms
The salary and appointment terms are consistent with the current rules for PhD degree students. The primary place of work is the Radioecology Section, Hevesy Laboratory at DTU Nutech , Risø Campus in Roskilde and the work period will be before 1st December 2017 for three years.
