Reactor physics

Reactor physics addresses the nuclear processes in fission and fusion reactors, including neutron and photon transport and neutron activation of structural materials.

Risø DTU is performing calculations for the Swedish nuclear power utilities of fast neutron fluxes and heat deposition from gamma irradiation in structural materials adjacent to the core to evaluate possible material damages from neutron irradiation, and of neutron activation of materials close to the reactor core to evaluate what precautions are needed in case of maintenance and to determine the final waste classification.

Methods for neutronics calculations for the ITER thermonuclear fusion reactor are being developed, aimed at determining the neutron and gamma heating and the neutron activation of structural and diagnostic systems.
